The historic city of Polonnaruwa is located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka. It is located 226 km from the capital. Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 BC. It includes magnificent gardens, monuments of the city, and irrigation ruins, created by King Parakramabahu the Great in the 12th century. Due to its archaeological significance and ancient technological superiority, Polonnaruwa was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982 as Ancient Polonnaruwa. In its history, Polonnaruwa was made the capital in 1070 during the reign of King Vijayabahu who defeated the Chola invaders. During the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great, who ruled the country from 1153 to 1186, the country became self-sufficient in paddy cultivation and other crops by constructing a huge irrigation network with huge reservoirs. That is why Sri Lanka came to be known as the Granary of the East. Therefore, the ruins of Polonnaruwa prove that it was a famous kingdom during the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great. The richness and beauty of this kingdom can still be clearly seen. Even today, Polonnaruwa remains one of the best planned archeological sites in the country, bearing witness to the wisdom and greatness of the first rulers of the ancient city.
