Kandy is the last royal capital of Sri Lanka. It is a major tourist destination in the Highlands. It is located 115km from Colombo and 465m above sea level. Famous for the Temple of the Tooth and many other temples, this city can be called the cultural capital of the island. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. The Perahera Festival of the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is held every year in the months of July or August and the Last Night Perahera is the most spectacular event in the country. It is attended by more than 50 ornate elephants adorned with the Royal Elephant King adorned with a golden casket, as well as more than a thousand elaborate drummers and dancers who travel around the city with the Nilame. This is a must-see if you are visiting Sri Lanka during the Perahera months. As a World Heritage Site, this is one of the must-see places on your trip.
